MULTIPLYING OUR IMPACT

Dear Friends,

In the pages that follow, you’ll encounter the data and stories that show who our students are and how they’re learning, succeeding, and building toward choice-filled futures.

In every city we serve, we see our impact multiplied each day: younger siblings entering the same classrooms where their older sisters or brothers once thrived, students building on early academic gains year after year, and teachers whose relationships stretch across entire families.

The multiplier effect matters as we rebuild from the COVID-19 pandemic. Our students have made large strides since the pandemic, with double-digit improvements in core subjects, a sharp rise in early literacy, and the highest year-over-year math growth in our history. These results reflect consistent instruction and leadership, and strong partnerships with families.

This year also marked our launch in a new city. More than 500 students started the year as KIPP students for the first time after KIPP Paterson Prep Elementary and Middle School joined our community. Paterson joins Newark and Camden in multiplying access to high-quality public education in communities where families seek strong options for their children.

As our footprint grows, so does our responsibility to ensure that progress continues.

The work ahead focuses on academic achievement, student experience, and long-term pathways to and through college.

Thank you for the support that makes this work possible and for your commitment to students across our communities.

With gratitude,

Ryan Hill
CEO, KIPP New Jersey & Miami

OUR VISION:

One day, our nation will know Newark, Camden, and Paterson, New Jersey as cities of world-class public education.

We see the multiplier effect every day: early reading builds confidence, family support strengthens attendance, and educators who stay long enough shape entire families—driving long-term success for students.

The Families Who Choose KIPP

FULFILLING OUR PROMISES TO FAMILIES

When students walk through our door each year, we promise them a life filled with choices. That begins with families choosing a school that grows with them. Across New Jersey, families choose KIPP because it offers access to strong public schools—and because that choice continues to multiply opportunity over time.

From Kindergarten…

"I chose KIPP again because of what I saw with my daughter. Her teachers were personal, invested, and saw her potential. When my son started, his teacher noticed right away that he needed more challenges and made adjustments. That kind of care is why I stay here.”

Amirah Younger, Kindergarten parent, KIPP Seek Academy

...To Graduation

"KIPP was the first ‘yes’ I got in the school lottery, and I’ve been saying yes ever since. The partnership and family feeling are still there years later. My children received exactly what was promised—teachers who cared and support through college. Now one child is a college graduate, one works for KIPP, and one is applying to college.”

Creating School Communities Where Students Show Up and Succeed

Strong attendance and growing enrollment reflect a culture of trust, belonging, and partnership that motivates students to show up. Since welcoming 80 students in 2002 at our flagship middle school in Newark’s South Ward, we’ve educated nearly 19,900 students across Newark and Camden.

After pandemic disruptions, intentional collaboration among families, teachers, and students has led to significant gains in daily attendance and learning time—about three additional days of school per student each year compared to during the pandemic. This shared commitment ensures KIPP New Jersey students have greater access to opportunity and a stronger future.

At TEAM, attendance is a partnership shaped by leaders like Nicole Sunwabe and carried forward by students like Fatoumata Bah, who show up each day ready to grow.

"We start by talking with families about why showing up matters. When students are here every day, they build stronger habits and learn more.”

Driving Academic Growth Across Grades

Since the pandemic began, more than 2,200 additional students are now proficient in ELA or math. Proficiency in literacy grows fastest when schools and families work together. Since shifting to a structured, phonics-based reading program, KIPP New Jersey has seen double-digit reading gains among second graders in Newark and Camden.

“It’s true what they say—it takes a village. The teachers give my kids the tools to learn to read, and we build on it together every night at home.”

WHERE MOMENTUM STARTS: EARLY LITERACY (K-2)

As students build decoding and fluency skills in the earliest grades, confidence grows, and learning accelerates across subjects.

KIPP students in New Jersey are outperforming both the national and KIPP network averages in both proficiency and growth.

HANDS-ON LEARNING MATTERS

The 'Tech Titans’ robotics team from KIPP Lanning Square Middle School recently competed in a LEGO FIRST Robotics competition against teams from across New Jersey, placing third in the robotics section.

ACCESS TO COLLEGE & CAREER

Opening More Doors After Graduation

Our goal is to expand the number of doors available to students after high school. That starts with strong college-ready preparation—a solid GPA, rigorous coursework, and strong writing skills—which gives students the widest range of options, regardless of the path they ultimately choose.

The data shows the multiplier effect of preparation: college-ready graduates persist at higher rates, complete degrees more often, and enter careers with more options.

“After I graduated, my KIPP Forward counselor, Mr. Saxon, helped me think through my options and decide what direction I wanted to take. Aviation mechanics stood out to me, so I enrolled in the Aviation Institute of Maintenance with a substantial scholarship. When I finished, the job placement team at AIM helped me secure a role as an Aircraft Deicing Technician."

Developing and Retaining Educators Who Reflect Our Communities

Our schools are strengthened by educators whose longevity and commitment shape entire communities. The impact of our educators is felt in countless ways. They push students academically, but they also build routines and relationships that help students gain confidence.

More than 75 alumni have returned to our organization across our schools and central office to impact the next generation of KIPP New Jersey students.

In New Jersey, our highest-performing teachers bring over thirteen years of teaching experience to their classrooms—these tenures multiply their impact for the students and families they serve.

When educators are supported and developed over time, the impact they have on student trajectories is extraordinary.

“Across a decade at KIPP in Camden, I’ve taught multiple siblings from the same families, and the trust we build over time is powerful. When families know you want the same things they want for their children, the relationship deepens, and students respond academically.”

INVESTMENT

Investing in the Schools and Neighborhoods Our Students Call Home

Since our founding, KIPP New Jersey has invested more than $500 million in school facilities across Newark, Camden, and now Paterson—creating strong public schools that anchor neighborhoods and expand access to opportunity.

As a nonprofit network of public schools, KIPP uses philanthropy strategically: donor support helps launch and grow schools to full enrollment, after which they operate on public funding alone. A one-time investment during a school’s growth phase doesn’t just support a single year—it helps create a school that educates thousands of students every year, in perpetuity, multiplying the impact of a donation.

For the Maher family, supporting KIPP students is a shared commitment. Brendan, an impact investor and philanthropist, has served on the KIPP board for over a decade, focusing on KIPP Forward and increasing college completion and access to quality jobs. His parents, Kevin and Jana, fund an emergency micro-grant program that helps students cover small but critical expenses that can otherwise derail college enrollment or persistence. Together with Brendan’s siblings, the family provides targeted gap funding to support KIPP alumni through key postsecondary transitions and toward strong career outcomes.

Across every city, strong academics and strong family relationships are moving student achievement upward.

As we continue this work, our commitment remains the same: to build a future where every child has the opportunity to live a choice-filled life, and every community sees the benefits of that progress.
